Shabbat Dinner

I have been using this challah recipe (link to come) for over a year now and I just love it. When you are married to a self-proclaimed bread snob, you have to make it your life's work to produce the perfect challah. I think I have come quite close. I use Joan Nathan's Bakery Challah recipe and she has some good tips for the egg wash and the varying temps to use. It took awhile, but I finally found the perfect size for my challahs that allowed them to bake properly in the right amount of time. One challah I bring for Shabbat dinner and the other one is eaten on Shabbat and however long we can stretch it during the week. Leo was not thrilled when he asked for challah and peanut butter today and there was none left. Double batches may be in my future.

This is called Spiced Sweet Roasted Red Pepper Hummus and it definitely has the *spice*. I made it for a potluck block party tomorrow and I doubled it so we could have some tonight. I think this will be one of my dad's favorite.

This is my favorite sweet kugel, from the cookbook Spice and Spirit. It is called Plum Kugel and it comes out perfect everytime. This time, I used a combination of plums, peaches and apples, but I usually just throw in canned peaches (so easy and cheap!). I omit the margarine completely and sometimes use cornflakes instead of the soft bread crumbs. I didnt have enough for the topping, so I just sprinkled cinnamon and called it a day. It's even yummy out of the fridge the next day.

This is my first attempt at a parve cheesecake and I got the recipe here. Interestingly enough, there were two recipes, both called for the same amount of Tofutti "cream cheese" and "sour cream", but one took over an hour to bake and this one took 30 minutes. Well, not really. I left it in for over 40 min., but had to run to gymnastics and it still isn't as golden as I would like. I am just hoping that it is cooked through and that everyone loves it. I bought cookies for the kids, I dont waste the good stuff on them ;)
